Govt. bans ‘Maaveer Day’ events .

The government has banned any form of publicity, celebrations, functions or events connected to the LTTE, Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said today.  He said Sri Lanka would also through diplomatic channels request other countries to follow suit.
With regard to the incident at the Anuradhapura prison last week, the minister said according to a confidential report, if the Anuradhapura Prison’s Superintendent had not taken timely action and prevented the LTTE inmates from celebrating ‘Maaveer Day’ last Friday there would have been a major disaster because the Sinhala prisoners were planning to attack them.

“Fifty three hardcore LTTE cadres including two condemned to death were making surreptitious arrangements to hold ‘Maaveer Day’ at the Anuradhapura prison,” the minister said and added that a sudden check by the prison’s superintendent had found posters with the LTTE emblem and pictures of Prabhakaran, three 3G mobile phones, 19 mobile phones, barbed wire and normal wire.
