Sri Lanka, Right to Association: SF to HRC over Balapitiya incident

Army Commander Sarath Fonseka says he will lodge a complaint with the Human Rights Commission (HRC) of Sri Lanka over the incident in Balapitiya yesterday.
The police disrupted a public meeting at Balapitiya yesterday organised by the Democratic Party led by Fonseka saying permission had not been obtained to use loudspeakers.

SF flays Pillay for pursing personal agenda; Denied opportunity to meet UNHRC chief

Democratic Party leader Gen. Sarath Fonseka yesterday alleged that visiting United Nations Human Rights Commissioner Navanethem Pillay was pursuing an agenda of her own. An irate former war winning army commander told The Island that the UN mission in Colombo and the visiting Commissioner had deprived him of an opportunity to make representations, in spite of her being here on a week-long visit. "The UN could have easily accommodated me," the former MP said, alleging Pillay seemed only interested in hearing what her favourites had to say.

No Restrictions On HC Pillay; Fonseka wants to meet with HC

The government says there will be no restrictions placed on the movements of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHRC) Navi Pillay during her visit to Sri Lanka at the end of this month.
Former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka said that he hopes to meet Pillay and discuss several issues with her during her visit.

Former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka says a proper domestic mechanism should be in place to address accountability issues to ward off pressure for an international investigation.
Speaking to the Colombo Gazette after addressing the media today, Fonseka also said that the government cannot lean on countries like China and sideline other countries.
“I don’t think even the Chinese government will like that,” he said.
He said the accountability issue had damaged the image of Sri Lanka and if his party comes to power he is ready to discuss the issue with other countries and resolve the differences.
