Student leader Bandara’s arrest part of witch hunt: IUSF .

Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) Convener Najith Indika said student leaders were subjected to a witch hunt by the Government and this had led to the arbitrary arrest of former IUSF convener Sanjeewa Bandara.  He was produced before the Kandy Magistrate and remanded till July 23 on charges of breaking bail conditions.
“Three of our student leaders visited the Peradeniya Police Station because we asked to make a statement after the university security personnel made a false complaint against us.

Thugs attack students’ ‘Sathyagraha’

The ‘Sathyagraha’ campaign carried out by students of Rajarata University demanding authorities to remove the unjustifiable suspension of classes of 27 students has been attacked by thugs.
Today (18th), on the 191st day of the ‘Sathyagraha’, thugs who had arrived early morning in a motorcycle have set fire to the temporary hut students were using for the ‘Sathyagraha’. One student has been injured in the incident.

Why Sri Lankan children in north drop out

 Sri Lankan authorities have expressed concern over an increasing number of reports that children are dropping out of school in the conflict-affected north, where economic pressure and poor prospects are creating conditions that could have negative consequences for the future development of the region.
Most of the dropouts are from poor families who find it difficult to make ends meet as humanitarian assistance dries up almost five years after decades of civil war ended. This situation is being aggravated by an acute lack of job opportunities and a rising cost of living. “It’s a vicious cycle,” said Sivalingam Sathyaseelan, Secretary to the provincial Ministry of Education.

Sri Lanka: Few jobs for university grads in the north

but getting a job is another matter
COLOMBO, 9 January 2014 (IRIN) - University graduates in northern Sri Lanka, which is recovering from decades of civil war, are looking at a sparse employment landscape with few opportunities on offer, say officials.

“Those from the north face a much more difficult time than those from elsewhere in the country. New jobs are very difficult to find,” Rupavathi Keetheswaran, the government agent for the northern Kilinochchi District, the top public official in the area, told IRIN.

The Government has unveiled an ambitious set of policies and proposals for general education in the country, which seeks to get more budgetary allocation for the sector, make school education mandatory for children from 5-16, as well as plans to reduce reliance on private tuition.
The report, based on proposals presented to the Special Parliamentary Advisory Committee of Education, was on Wednesday presented to Parliament by Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena.
The proposals are to be included in a new Education Act to be introduced soon.

Student leader Sanjeewa Bandara banned from entering Universities

The Convenor of the Inter University Student’s Federation (IUSF) Sanjeewa Bandara has been granted bail and has also been banned from entering the premises of any Universities in the country by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today.

FUTA calls for release of student leader

The Federation of University Teachers Association President Dr Nirmal Ranjith Devasiri today called for the immediate release of  student union leader  Sanjeeva bandara and Rev. Kimbullewwe Chandananda thero who are now in custody.

Parliamentarians banned while military stages programmes in schools in North

A circular sent to schools in the Northern Province of the country of Eezham Tamils at the orders of the occupying governor of the Sinhala State, Maj. Gen. G.A. Chandrasri aimed at banning Tamil parliamentarians participating any school programmes in the province. The circular dated 20 June and signed by Education, Culture and Sports Secretary, S. Sathiaseelan, functioning under the Sinhala governor, said that without prior permission from the SL governor, no function could take place in the schools in which parliamentarians participate.

Convener of Inter Uiniversity Student Federation remanded

The bail conditions imposed on the convener of Inter University Students Federation Sanjeewa Bandara were removed by Colombo Fort Magistrate and he was remanded till the 15th.
The police had charged him for participating in a students’ agitation and damaging public property while under bail conditions.

Threats to university students continue, said the Inter-University Students Federation (IUSF) Convener, Sanjeewa Bandara. According to the student leader, more students and their parents have been threatened by ‘security personnel’ demanding they stop all union activities within the universities.

The Federation of Peradeniya University Teachers’ Associations (FPUTA), comprising eight sister unions, was profoundly disturbed by the report that the President of the Peradeniya Student Union (PSU), Mr. Janaka Nilanga Madushan, was threatened with his life by a group claiming to be of the CID yesterday, May 14th, 2013, at 6:30pm.

Privatization of university education for the benifit of 2% super rich What’s next to sell?


A massive protest was organised by the Medical Faculty Students’ Union of the Colombo Medical College, in front of the Faculty last week, against the intake of unqualified local and foreign students into local universities for the academic year 2011/2012, for LKR 7.5 million per head. The second appeal to the Government was to withdraw the students of the Kothalawala Defence Academy which is run under the Ministry of Defence and in the process of privatisation, from hospitals attached to local universities which are maintained under the Ministry of Higher Education, when receiving clinical training.

Uni students scholarship funds used for military training

So called leadership training devours students welfare funds ?
The Inter University Students' Federation (IUSF) alleged yesterday the last two Mahapola instalments of the first year university students are to be withdrawn by the government, to allocate funds to pay off the military personnel involved in the Leadership Training Programme.
