(Srilankamirror) - The Sevanagala Sugar factory, owned by Daya Group of Companies, has been illegally taken over and occupied by thugs employed by Coconut Development Minister Jagath Pushpakumara, said the Group’s media unit in a statement.
The Group said in the statement, this illegal and forced takeover has taken place amidst a government move to table an expropriation bill in parliament to takeover several privately-owned entities, including Sevanagala Sugar Company.
No responsible official in the government has paid any attention to this illegal takeover carried out without any legal foundation, said the statement.
The thugs have assaulted and injured several workers of the Factory, it said.
Even before the expropriation bill is introduced to the House, the unreasonable takeover of a private businessman’s assets in this manner will have a detrimental impact on peace in the country, said the statement.
Urging the government to pay immediate attention to this matter, Daya Group of Companies warned in the statement that this incident would have a negative effect on the entire business community.
The management of the factory has been forcibly evicted, it added.
