The government said in Parliament today that certain international elements were grooming some groups in Sri Lanka to bring about a regime change in the same manner they did in Libya. Making his remarks during the debate on the adjournment motion in Parliament, Leader of the House Nimal Siripala de Silva said that these international forces were well aware that the government of President Mahinda Rajapaksa could not be defeated through democratic means.
He said that these inimical forces funded some groups in Libya and ignited people to take to the streets against the government of that country.
“There are such attempts being made here. We have to nip it in the bud,” he said.
He was responding to JVP rebel MP Ajith Kumara who moved the motion and charged that the government was trying to undermine the democratic rights of students and political rights activists. The Leader of the House remarked that some persons claiming themselves to be students’ leaders had sexually abused fellow students in the guise of subjecting them to ragging.
“We have to eradicate ragging from the university system. Freshers are subjected to inhuman forms of ragging. It is unacceptable. The government cannot tolerate such acts,” he said. (Kelum Bandara)
