If the LLRC report reveals there were violations of internationally accepted treaties during the final phase of the war, such incidents will be investigated and culprits prosecuted, Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said at a Cabinet briefing yesterday.
He asserted that the government still has not deviated from its stance on war crimes allegations and international humanitarian law violations. He further stated the government realised the necessity of a body to look into complaints on war crimes allegations even before the conclusion of the war.
“Different people can say different things about war crimes allegations and humanitarian law violations. There was a huge amount of external pressure too. But our stand is, we have our own mechanisms to look into such complaints and there is no need for international investigative bodies. That is why the President appointed an independent body called the LLRC” he said.
The Minister said the government will make the LLRC report available to the media after presenting it to Parliament. (RJ)
