UNP protest against Govt.’s billion-rupee loss making decisions

A public protest will be held at Panduwasnuwara, in Hettipola, on August 6, to educate the public about the irrational decisions taken by the government, which has resulted in the country losing millions of dollars in foreign exchange, the UNP said yesterday.

Parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekera told a news conference in Colombo that the ill conceived oil hedging deal has resulted in the Mahinda Rajapaksa regime having to pay two private banks Rs.18 billion and the figure could rise to Rs.50 billion if they decide to pursue legal action.

A sum of Rs.200 million has already been set aside for consultation fees, he said.

Jayasekera said that economic mismanagement has led to the country’s debt burden increasing further and it was high time the government got its act together or else it was the people who would continue to suffer.

The UNP will continue its campaign to educate the public about the carefree attitude adopted by the authorities in spending the tax payers money, he said
