The decision taken to reduce the number of parliamentary seats allocated to the Jaffna electorate from ten to six is an unfair one, Spokesman for the Tamil National Alliance Suresh Premachandra stated.
The Elections Department earlier today stated that it may reduce the number of allocated seats for the Jaffna electorate to six in view of the decrease in the voter base by 320,000 since 2009.
Premachandra stated that many of the civilians in Jaffna had fled to other parts of the country as well as foreign countries during the war and were still in the process of returning to their homes which was the reason for the low voter base.
He said that the resettlement in the North has not yet been completed while many others had died during the war as well. He added that the matter would be taken up with the government and the Elections Commissioner in future discussions.
