Sri Lanka Police Inspectors’ Association is pushing for action against UPFA Galle District MP Nishantha Muthuhettigama for abusing the Officer-in-Charge of Akmeemana police recently.
A spokesperson for the 8,000-member strong association told The Island that they expected Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa to take the SLFP politician to task. Asked whether the association intended to launch a campaign to pressure the government to discipline the MP, the spokesman said "We aren’t a trade union.
There is no possibility of a trade union campaign. Instead we hope to step up pressure through the media."
The association recently wrote to Speaker Rajapaksa and SLFP General Secretary, MP Maithripala Sirisena, calling for their intervention. The association also urged new IGP N. K. Illangakoon to take up its grievances with the Speaker.
The official said that the government hadn’t so far responded to their missive.
Another police official told The Island that failure on the part of the government to restraint MP Muttuhettigama could further deteriorate the relationship between the politician and the MP. The police said the government could obtain video evidence of the MP abusing police from Swarnavahini. The MP told a senior police officer in charge of Galle that he would chase away OIC of Akmeemana unless he was transferred.
