Punish Lankan war criminals, TNCC chief appeals to PM
NCC president K V Thangkabalu today appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to ensure that those responsible for alleged war crimes in Sri Lanka against Tamil civilians during the last phase of the offensive against the LTTE in Sri Lanka faced action.
Calling on the Prime Minister at his residence in Delhi, Thangkabalu referred to a recent UN report on this matter, which found alleged human rights violations during the final phase of the conflict, a TNCC release here said. Thangkabalu said action should be taken against persons responsible under international laws for the alleged war crimes, the release said. He also discussed with the Prime Minister issues including resttlement of Tamils lodged in camps in the island nation, monitoring if Indian aid to Sri Lankan Tamils reached the right beneficiaries and a permanent solution to the ethnic issue, it added. It added Thangkabalu also took up the issue of alleged attacks on Indian fishermen by the Lankan Navy despite assurances from the Sri Lankan government and urged the Prime Minister to ensure that the attacks stopped. The Prime Minister had assured he would take necessary steps on these issues, it said.
