Mandana Ismail had to fled the country |
Investigations regarding the armed gang of thugs who recently broke into the house of Sunday Leader Co-Editor Mandana Ismail Abeywickrema’s house in pursuit of certain documents, have currently come in a standstill, Police sources say.
Ms. Abeywickrema had informed the Secretary of the Ministry of Law and Order retired Major General Nanda Mallawarachchi in writing, about the surprisingly slow pace of the police investigations regarding the matter.
She has forwarded the letter through her Attorney Mr. Upul Kumarapperuma.
In her letter to the Ministry of Law and Order Secretary, Ms. Mandana has accused that since the day of the crime, up until now, the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) or any other responsible institute has not taken steps to take judicial action regarding the matter.
She has also said that no satisfactory answer has been received either, for the queries she made from the
responsible authorities.
The letter further reads that according to the facts informed to her by the CCD that 4 suspects had been arrested regarding the incident and some goods that were robbed from her house had been found at their possession, the police clearly stands a chance to bring the culprits before justice as this even have clearly been penalized in the Penal Code in Sri Lanka.
Mandana thus points out that it is questionable why the suspects have not yet been brought before a Court.
From her letter, Ms. Abeywickrema is requesting the Secretary of the Law and Order Ministry to order the relevant authorities to take steps in filing charges against these suspects and to present them before the Court, honoring the rights and liberties she inherits from the Constitution of Sri Lanka.
