The United National Party (UNP) said today the Sri Lankan Government should express its views on the statement made by the UNHRC Chief on the statue of late Prime Minister D. S. Senanayake and the Buddhist flag, which are at the Independence Square, during the ongoing Human Rights Council sessions in Geneva.
“Government has done little or nothing to condemn what UNHRC Chief said about the statue of late Prime Minister D. S. Senanayake and the Buddhist flag. President Mahinda Rajapaksa commented about it only after UNHRC Chief left the country. The government should take this matter up at the Geneva sessions,” UNP spokesman Gayantha Karunathilake told a news conference.
He questioned why External Affairs Minister G.L. Peries didn’t bring this matter up when at a meeting with the British media he had responded to a statement made by Navanetham Pillay on Sri Lanka.
Mr. Karunathilake said the UNP was awaiting a reply from the UNHRC Chief to the letter sent by UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.
