Period of youths disappearing before country again - Ajith Kumara

The country is again experiencing a period in which parents lose their children, women their husbands and children their fathers, alleges the Movement for People’s Struggle. MFPS national organizer Ajith Kumara said all should rally against this situation.

The country’s rulers no longer allow democratic governance and have unleashed repression against the masses, he told a sit-down protest in front of the court of appeal in Colombo today (Feb. 15).

It took place to demand freedom for the abducted Jaffna political activists Lalith Kumar Weeraraju and Kugan Murugananthan, and an immediate halt to kidnappings and murders taking place island wide, especially in the North.

He noted that a youth of Wellawatte was abducted as a human rights case by him was being heard to his advantage in the court.

Another suspect was abducted at the court premises, and there is the likelihood that even judges will be kidnapped in the future, Mr. Kumara warned.

The court of appeal took up a petition that seeks Weeraraju and Murugananthan be produced before courts.

MFPS political affairs secretary Pubudu Jayagoda, ‘We Are Sri Lankans’ convener Udul Premaratne, Communist Party of Sri Lanka (Maoist) secretary Ajith Surendra and relatives of the two missing youths participated.

Speaking during the protest, Weeraraju’s father said he believed his son was still alive, and urged that both be released.
