Vaiko asks PM not to support Sri Lanka at UNHRC

Chennai: MDMK chief Vaiko on Tuesday termed as shocking a Sri Lankan official's claim about New Delhi's backing of Colombo in the ongoing UNHRC session and urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh not to support it.

"It is shocking that Mahinda Samarasinghe, the chief Lankan negotiator, has stated that India will support Sri Lanka in the crucial voting at the ongoing session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) at Geneva," Vaiko said in a letter to Singh.

Samrasinghe, who is leading the Lankan delegation at the UNHRC, had earlier claimed that Sri Lanka has received India's full backing against the US sponsored motion on alleged human rights abuses by its army during the war against LTTE.

Vaiko said India's envoy to Sri Lanka had also reportedly assured President Mahinda Rajapakse of New Delhi's support.

"If it is true, that will be the ever unpardonable betrayal by the Indian Government against the Tamils of Sri Lanka.

"I would request you that the Indian government should not support the racist Sri Lankan Government in the UNHRC in Geneva," Vaiko, who has been consistently charging the Congress-led UPA with aiding Colombo militarily in its fight against LTTE, said.

The letter:
Dear Dr. Manmohan Singh ji,

Vanakkam.

I am pained to point out that the Indian government gave all assistance, logistics support, military aid and financial assistance to the racist Sinhala government enabling them to commit the terrible genocide of Eelam Tamils in the island of Sri Lanka. Hundreds of thousands of innocent Tamils were brutally massacred by the Sri Lankan armed forces which has been exposed by the 3 member panel appointed by the General Secretary of the United Nations. To hoodwink the international community, the Sri Lankan government appointed the LLRC which buried the truth and released a Goebelsian report justifying the role of the Sri Lankan government.

After the gruesome massacre of Tamils in Mullivaaikkaal in the 2nd and 3rd week of May 2009, Germany and fifteen other countries took steps to convene the Human Rights Council meeting at Geneva which was held in the last week of May 2009. In that crucial HRC meeting, India played an abominable role to adopt a resolution commending the role of the Sri Lankan government during the war period. This is an unforgivable betrayal by the UPA government of India against the Tamil race. The conscience of humanity is slowly awakening in the democratic countries.

Therefore, United States and some other countries are bringing a resolution in the Human Rights Council meeting at Geneva which started on 27th February 2012, to investigate the war crimes committed by the Sri Lanka government. I have already requested you in my letters that the Indian government should support such resolution to take steps to evolve a mechanism to investigate the war crimes, genocide committed by the Sri Lankan government against the Tamils and not to extend any support to the Sri Lankan government in this regard.
It is shocking that Mahinda Samrasinghe, the chief Lankan negotiator has stated on 27th February that India will support Sri Lanka in the crucial voting at the on-going session of the United Nations Human Rights Council UNHRC at Geneva. News have appeared that the Indian high commissioner in Colombo Mr. Ashok K. Kantha had met Mahinda Rajapakse, the president of Sri Lanka and assured him of India's support in the UNHRC meeting in Geneva. If it is true, then that will be the ever unpardonable betrayal of the Indian government against the Tamils of Sri Lanka. The hearts of the Tamils in Tamil Nadu and all over the world are bleeding due to the genocide. If the Indian government extends further support to Sri Lanka to shield them from being put in the dock of the International criminal court, the Indian government will also be held responsible as a co-accused in the crime of genocide against the Tamils.

I would request you not to put fire in the already wounded hearts of the Tamils. With all emphasis I would request you that the Indian government should not support the racist Sri Lankan government in the UNHRC in Geneva.
With regards,

Yours sincerely,
(Vaiko)
