SLMC registrar who had voiced opposition to the private medical college assaulted

The registrar of the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) Dr N.J. Nonis was assaulted by an unidentified individual near his residence at Moratuwa this evening.Assistant Secretary of the Government Medical Officers’ Association Dr. Upul Gunasekera told The Sunday Leader that Dr. Nonis had collapsed after receiving a severe blow to his head.

“Two people had stopped Dr. Nonis’s car near his gate and had pretended to make inquiries regarding an address. While one person was talking to Dr. Nonis the second person had come from behind and assaulted him using a pole. This is the first time a reputed consultant has been attacked,” Dr. Gunasekera said.

Dr. Nonis was one of the SLMC members who had voiced opposition to the medical college at Malabe.

Incidentally Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake urged the public recently to assault government doctors who have been protesting against the Malabe medical college
