Assault Dr. N. J. Nonis, Registrar of the Sri Lanka Medical Council condemed

Medical Specialists condemn assault
The Councils and the membership of the Sri Lanka Colleges of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, Paediatricians and Surgeons and the Ceylon College of Physicians yesterday expressed their deep concern and noted with chagrin the deliberately planned assault on Dr. N. J. Nonis, Registrar of the Sri Lanka Medical Council by unknown persons near his residence on Tuesday night.
They said in a statement that "such behaviour is by no means acceptable. We wish to request the Government of Sri Lanka to take all necessary action to bring the assailants before the law urgently. The Government has a duty to ensure that such acts where people take the law unto their own hands in trying to coerce the Sri Lanka Medical Council to accede to their desires do not take place in future. Such incidents will to jeopardise and compromise medical education and health care in the country.

"We wish to assert that the Sri Lanka Medical Council is the official body that governs the practice of medicine and medical education in Sri Lanka. All institutions of medical education must strictly abide by the rules and regulations currently in place and follow the procedures diligently."
