Uni students in police training before Army stint

By Gayan Kumara Weerasingha
Around 1500 university students have already been absorbed into the Police Training College (PTC) with the intention of providing them with leadership skills, Police department sources said.
A Police department source added that these students have been absorbed into PTCs situated at Pathgama, Mahiyangana, Elpitiya, Kundasale and Nikaweratiya.
These sources said that this exercise had been undertaken by the Police department not with the intention of subjecting students to military training but with the sincere motive of providing ‘solid leadership training which could come in handy in the future.’
According to police sources such training has been undergone by all who seek jobs in the state or public sector for a period of two weeks at Police Training Colleges countrywide and that it was not a programme which had been mapped out by them overnight.
“This exercise has been in operation for a long time now and it is not something that has come out of the blues,” said a top Police department official.
Most of the secretaries of ministers and district agents have also undergone this training over the years, said the Police department source.
The programme is also designed to shed light on how university students should hold protests and demonstrations without being a hindrance to the public and also how one should respect the laws of the country, he added.
