2011-05-18
The security forces and police have organized massive Vesak celebrations, carnivals and dansels in the North and East of the country following a directive by the Presidential Secretariat to use the 2,600th Sambuddha Jayanthi to celebrate the second anniversary of the assassinationn of LTTE Leader Velupillai Prabhakaran on a grand scale.

The security forces have therefore organized a series of Vesak celebrations from the next seven days in the North and East commencing today (18), when Prabhakaran was killed two years ago. The security forces and the police have in a combines effort organized a large number of dansels and put up massive Vesak decorations in the former LTTE stronghold, Kilinochchi.
It is learnt that the security forces have forcibly made Muslim and Tamil civilians in the North and East participate in the religious ceremonies organized to celebrate Vesak.
Meanwhile, a Buddhist society had been established in the Jaffna University with the intervention of security forces and Tamil and Muslim students have been forced to join it.
The Lankadeepa website has published a story on the Vesak celebrations being organized in the North and East under the supervision of the security forces stating that the former LTTE strongholds are basking in the glory of Vesak.
