Sri Lanka: 17 Allied science students leaders arrested

Four Allied Science Student leaders arrested
Four activists of Allied Health Science Faculty students’ Union were arrested during the mass agitation held opposite University Grants Commission today (16th) against the move to reduce the period of the Allied Health Science degree to three years.
The President of the Peradeniya Students’ Council, the President and Vice President of Allied Health Science faculty at Peradeniya University and the President of the Allied Health Science Faculty of Ruhuna University are the student activists who have been arrested and are being detained in Kirulapone Police Station.

More than 150 students are engaged in a continuous ‘Satahyagraha’ and occasionally students carried on agitations and protest marches to demand the withdrawal of the government’s decision to slash the period of the degree.

13 more students arrested

13 students have been arrested while they were returning after the massive agitation held opposite University Grants Commission today (16th) to demand not to reduce the period of the Allied Health Science degree to three years.

Officers of Slave Island Police have stopped a bus travelled by students and had atempted to arrest a student displaying a bogus warrant. When the students protested agaisnt the attempt the police hdd forced the students with the bus to the police station.

It is reported that several students were assaulted by the police at the police station.

The total number of students arrested today is 17.
