National Civil Defense Committees to be reactivated

The government has decided to reactivate and empower the Community Police Service (National Civil Defense Committees) to arrest the growing trend rate of criminal and anti social activities in the country, SP Ajith Rohana, police media spokesperson said yesterday.


Action will be initiated by Senior DIG Colombo Anura Senanayake to reactivate these Committees on the instructions of IGP N. K. Illangakoon on the advice of Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

SP Rohana said that the assistance of members of civil society would be obtained to collate information and identify criminals and anti-social elements masquerading among members of the public in the city and rural areas of the country.

Major General (Retd) M. R. W. de Zoysa said that this was an awareness exercise carried out by the Surakimu Lanka Foundation to educate and create awareness amongst the people.

He said a series of seminars have been launched at district level, excluding the districts of the Northern province, by the government to create awareness amongst the next of kin of members of the security forces who had been killed in action, disabled soldiers and serving security personnel and members of National Civil Defense Committees.

These seminars were coordinated by former senior DIG and Commandant of the STF K. L .M. Sarathchandra who serves as a coordinating secretary to the President.

Amongst the guest speakers were former IGP Victor Perera, Senior DIG Colombo Anura Senanayake, Major General Nissanka Wijesinghe, Major General Mohan Sumanaweera, Brigadier Vasantha Bandara,Western UPFA Provincial Councilor Major Pradeep Undugoda and UPFA Southern Provincial Councilor Major Ajith Prasanna.
