FUTA calls for release of student leader

The Federation of University Teachers Association President Dr Nirmal Ranjith Devasiri today called for the immediate release of  student union leader  Sanjeeva bandara and Rev. Kimbullewwe Chandananda thero who are now in custody.

The organization at a press conference called the government to end what they called a ‘ current terror  campaign’  against the students   adding that student and university staff problems should  be resolved and their welfare be assured.

The  Association said it is disturbed about the suspension of student activities and accused   the  Minister of Higher Education  and  senior officials of the ministry  of working  to their  own agenda.

“The minister for Higher Education they say is all out to implement his policy of private universities which is the very cause of the current student unrest and accuses him of trying to politicize academics’, a statement from the FUTA said.
