He was taken to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital soon after the attack and he is undergoing treatment for the head injuries he suffered, sources said.
The victim is a final year student from the Arts Faculty of the University of Jaffna. Police investigations are continuing.
Meanwhile, the office of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jaffna Vasanthi Arasaratnam came under attack by the students today.
Hundreds of students gathered outside the Vice Chancellor’s office condemning the attack on the University Student’s Union Secretary Tharshananth last morning.
While damaging the window glasses of the Vice Chancellor’s office, the students also shouted slogans saying that the Vice Chancellor has failed to ensure the safety of the students.
The effigy of Vasanthi Arasaratnam , who is the first woman Vice Chancellor of the university of Jaffna was also set on fire by the students who had demanded that adequate security be provided to them in and out of the university.
Meanwhile, the posters paying tribute to those who were killed during the humanitarian operations in the Wanni three years ago had appeared in several places in the vicinity of the university.
