Statues vandalized in Batticaloa

Four statutes in the Batticaloa town had been vandalized by a group of unidentified persons early this morning (6) police said. Two statutes next to the Batticaloa clock tower depicting the father of India Mahathma Ghandi and founder of the world scout movement, Lord Baden Powell were among the four statues that were vandalized.

Police Media Spokesperson SP Ajith Rohana told Ceylon Today that another two statues belonging to very important people of the region next to the Batticaloa Anaipanthi Vidyalayam were also vandalized.

The statues of Swamy Vipulananthar of Palavarmani Periyathambipillai have also been vandalized by the gang. The police have been unable to identify or arrest any suspects with regard to this incident,” he said.

The heads of all four statues had been completely mutilated by the group who carried out this act.

A special team headed by an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) from the Batticaloa police has been deployed to conduct further investigations into the matter.
