Breathing space for asylum seekers

Switzerland and European Union countries have suspended deporting Sri Lankans who seek asylum following the recent UNHRC resolution in Geneva, according to reports from Geneva.

A large number of asylum seekers in Europe and UK were sent back to Sri Lanka soon after the war in the country ended.

However, following the recent UNHRC sessions in Geneva, Switzerland and several European countries have decided to delay the process of deporting Lankan asylum seekers, reports said.

Hundreds of Lankans who have been rejected asylum in Switzerland and in several European countries are on the waiting list to be sent home. However, those asylum seekers will not be sent immediately and their deportations have been suspended for another year until the UNHRC Commissioner Navaneethampillai submits a fresh report on Sri Lanka in March 2013, reports said.
