Army Commander Sarath Fonseka says he will lodge a complaint with the Human Rights Commission (HRC) of Sri Lanka over the incident in Balapitiya yesterday.
The police disrupted a public meeting at Balapitiya yesterday organised by the Democratic Party led by Fonseka saying permission had not been obtained to use loudspeakers.
A truck used for the public event was later seized by the police and the driver was also arrested.
Speaking to reporters today Fonseka said he had not violated the law in holding the public meeting.
He said that apart from lodging a complaint with the HRC over the police action at Balapitiya, his party will also raise the issue with the UN Human Rights Office.
Fonseka also said that he will be briefing diplomats based in Sri Lanka on yesterday’s incident. (Colombo Gazette)
