Maha Nayake of the Malwatte Chapter, Most Venerable Thibbotuwawe Siddhartha Sri Sumangala Maha Nayaka Thera said, despite having two-thirds majority, the government does not use its powers to abolish the 13th Amendment to the Constitution.
The Thera also said although the President has Executive powers, he does not use it when and where necessary, but that power unnecessarily on various other things.
Chief Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera, who had met the Maha Nayaka Thera, had requested him to issue a 'Sangha Order' against the 13th Amendment and to discuss the matter with the Maha Nayakas of the other three Nikayas, in order to abolish the Provincial Council system.
Gnanasara Thera also said the Most Ven. Sri Sumangala Thera agreed to issue a joint Sangha Order.
The Maha Nayaka Thera told the media, the government should always take decisions for the betterment of the country and its people. He went on to say, on most occasions, attention is not paid to the statements issued by the prelates.
"Not only the Provincial Council system but the other systems detrimental to the country should also be abolished. Though the PC system is prevalent, it does not benefit the country but costs much, financially," the Maha Nayaka Thera said.
