Sri Lanka tea workers get 25 pct pay increase
Sri Lanka, one of the world's largest exporters of tea, on Monday raised wages for hundreds of thousands of workers by nearly 25 percent as the island heads for a record crop.
Workers will now be paid 515 rupees ($4.70) a day for the next two years, up from 415 rupees, Kanishka Weerasinghe, deputy director general of the Employers Federation of Ceylon, told AFP.

Journalists who had gone to cover the last rights for Roshen Chanaka, who was killed by police shooting at a demonstration held against the government’s attempt to bring in a ‘pensions bill’ for private sector employees amidst their opposition, have been denied entry to the church where the mass is to be held. Roshen Chanaka’s body was removed by force from his home to the church by the Army.
However, journalists of the state media had been allowed inside the church and a tense situation has arisen due to certain relatives demanding that the body should be taken back to his home say reports reaching ‘Lankatruth.

The SL military was checking household lists to find out whether any outsiders were staying in the city. Outsiders found staying with the members of families are questioned about their details and reasons for their stay
The search operations were carried out in areas where Tamil people reside, sources in port town said
Meanwhile Sri Lanka Army has deployed its soldiers in important junctions and places in the city.

Sri Lanka Army occupying Jaffna has restarted its terrorising mission of photo registration of people in Jaffna peninsula. Some times back, when the ‘obligatory’ SL military registration of the people in Jaffna was challenged in the courts by the Tamil National Alliance, the SLA said in the courts that it had stopped the process. But, while the matter is sub-judicial, the registration has restarted and forms to this effect are being distributed by the occupying SL military, accuses TNA parliamentarian Mavai Senathiraja.

UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya has presented a Private Member’s Bill on Freedom of Information, which has been issued as a supplement to the Government Gazette.
This Bill seeks ``to provide for freedom of access to official information; specify grounds on which access may be denied: the establishment of the Freedom of Information Commission: the appointment of Information Officers: setting out the procedure for making requests for information and for matter connected therewith or incidental threto.’’

Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has told German Ambassador Jens Plotner that he had violated protocol by writing to him over last Monday’s incidents at the Katunayake Export Processing Zone (EPZ). The Defence Secretary called an urgent meet at the Defence Ministry with the German envoy immediately after receiving a two-page letter warning him of police excesses, which could have a detrimental impact on existing and future investments made by Germany.

The Indian Government will insist on following up on the points contained in the controversial Joint Statement issued a fortnight ago following the visit of Sri Lanka's External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris to New Delhi for bi-lateral talks.
India’s position will be reiterated when the postponed visit to Colombo of a high powered delegation of Indian officials takes place late next week. National Security Adviser Shiv Shanker Menon and Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao are confirmed to comprise the Indian delegation that will hold talks with Sri Lankan leaders during their visit to Colombo.

This week, a friend speaking to me on the phone, paused when I remarked that it took ordinary workers to teach this administration, its most telling lesson since it was returned to power post war, while the intelligentsia cowered under their beds, (metaporically speaking), except for some rare exceptions. I was then informed somewhat acerbically that there is nothing to be very surprised about this and further that ‘the intelligentsia has rarely challenged political authoritarianism at least in this country. Instead, it has been the workers, each and every time. These have always been watershed moments in history.’
