UNHRC to send team to Sri Lanka

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) will send a delegation to Sri Lanka in January next to get firsthand information on the alleged human rights violations during the last leg of the war against the LTTE.

Navaneetham Pillai, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, made this promise to DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin and former Union Minister T.R. Baalu, who met her in Geneva, according to a DMK release.

The two leaders handed over a copy of the text of resolutions adopted at the Tamil Eelam Supporters Organisation (TESO) conference in August 12 and a statement issued by DMK president M. Karunanidhi.

Addressing a meet of the British Tamil Forum (BTF) in London on Wednesday, Mr. Stalin said Tamils, a minority in Sri Lanka, wanted equality, dignity and self-respect. He said a political solution to the long-pending problems of the Tamils could be achieved only through a referendum and it should be done under the supervision of the United Nations. The Hindu
