Police defied Elections Department: CAFFE

The Eravur police had defied a request made by the Department of Elections to hand over the Key of the Eravur Post Office which had been used by a ruling UPFA candidate contesting for the Eastern Provincial Council, Campaign for Free and Fair Election (CAFFE) alleged yesterday. CAFFE Executive Director Keerthi Tennakoon in a letter addressed to the Commissioner of Elections Mahinda Deshapriya said that the police had refused to hand over the key stating that it was a complex issue. The police therefore had said that the post office could only be handed back to the Postal Department after the provincial council election concludes.

Mr. Tennakoon charged that this type of highhanded action clearly went against the orders of the Assistant Commissioner of Elections Batticaloa District, Asanga Ratnayake, who had advised the police to hand over the key to the Postal Department on July 28.
