A 24 hour strike by CEB union

About 15,000 employees of the Ceylon Electricity Board will engage in a 24 hour strike action from midnight on the 3rd.

The decision to carry out the strike action was taken due to the failure by authorities to respond to demands made by employees to remove anomalies that exist between salaries of executive officers and non-executive employees in the CEB said the Committee Member of the CEB Joint Trade Union Alliance Ranjan Jayalal.

He said employees would not hesitate to make it a continuous strike if the government does not respond to the 24 hour strike. Mr. Jayalal pointed out that CEB employees get a salary increment every three years, in January, 2012 the salaries of all employees were increased by 25% and later the salaries of engineers and executive grade employees only were increased again by 50% creating anomalies between salaries of employees.

He said the government should be held responsible for any power failures that occur during the strike action
