The Working Committee of the United National Party (UNP) yesterday adopted a resolution to push the government for the full implementation of LLRC recommendations. The resolution, which was presented to the UNP Working Committee, was drafted by Lakshman Kiriella, Joseph Michael Perera and Mangala Samaraweera, party sources told Ceylon Today.
It states the UNP will support the government in its endeavours to implement the recommendations made in the LLRC report. At the same time, it says the implementation of LLRC recommendations could be a “truly Sri Lankan solution” for the national question.
“The implementation of the LLRC report would strengthen democracy, good governance and the rule of law,” the resolution says.
However, speaking to Ceylon Today, UNP Media Spokesman Gayantha Karunathilaka said, “The party strongly opposes foreign intervention, but calls for the implementation of a Sri Lankan solution.”
Meanwhile, a report was presented to the party Working Committee yesterday with regard to the clash that erupted at Sirikotha following the party leadership election. The report was prepared by President’s Counsel Shrinath Perera.
The report contains a list of names of those who are found responsible for the clash. Accordingly, more than 60 activists, including UNP Western Provincial Councillor Shiral Lakthilaka, Southern Provincial Councillor Maithri Gunarathne, Ravi Jayawardena, Lal Perera and Lakshman Abeygunawardena are being held responsible for the attack. However, no parliamentarians were charged of inciting violence following the leadership election.
However, the report has also recommended that the Disciplinary Committee should inquire as to why Karu Jayasuriya, Sajith Premadasa and Dayasiri Jayasekera could not prevent the clash.
Karunathilake said the report will be forwarded to the Disciplinary Committee of the party for further action.

Meanwhile, the Working Committee of the party also decided to temporarily revoke the suspension on Matara District MP Buddhika Pathirana. Therefore, Pathirana will re-obtain his party membership, which was suspended by the party leadership, a few months ago. According to Karunathilaka, Pathirana will have to undergo a probationary period of three months.
In addition to those major decisions, the UNP Working Committee decided to assign Assistant Leader of the party Joseph Michael Perera to organize the party May Day rally, which is scheduled to be held in Jaffna.
