Friday, 17 February 2012 22:15 .A Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) affiliated trade union today urged the government to grant a 40 per cent salary increase so as to cushion the burden on an already suffering people from the fall out of the unprecedented increase in fuel prices.
Inter Company Employees Union (ICEU) President Wasantha Samarasinghe said the unions would take to the streets soon to compel the government to grant relief to the people burdened by the soaring cost of living. “Several unions will join hands on February 23 to protest the increase in the fuel prices and to urge the government to grant a meaningful salary increase,” he said.
The ICEU has been consistently demanding to know why the fuel prices were raised by such a margin and why the government is doing little or nothing to soften the impact on the cost of living.
