Teachers Attacked In Kurunegala

Three persons were injured today when a protest organized by JVP affiliated Ceylon Teacher Services Union (CTSU) in Kurunegala was attacked by a group of thugs.
The protest was organized by the CTSU opposite the Wayamba Province office of the Education Department Cooperative Society (EDCS) against the taking over the EDCS administration by the government.

The EDCS administration was won by the CTSU in an election held in 2008. The government has however forcibly taken over the administration of the EDCS by appointing an interim committee.
Speaking to The Sunday Leader, Head of the CTSU Mahinda Jayasinghe said that the attack had been carried out by government thugs and that three teachers who had participated in the protest had been injured in the attack.
He said that the attackers, a group of about 50 persons, had arrived in a car bearing number NWKP2929 and a bus bearing number NWGY 0835.
He added that the attackers were organized by a private secretary to Minister Johnston Fernando.
Jayasinghe said that the CTSU would continue with its protest campaign that will be held at provincial level against the EDCS interim administration and a series of seminars at district level.
